Smoke from wildfires in Canada is expected to once again reach New York City Monday, months after a haze blanketed the boroughs with unhealthy air.
Officials warned residents Sunday to expect hazy conditions come sunrise, citing northern winds set to bring several plumes smoke back into the region.
The smoke is expected to remain above the surface, forecasters further warned – resulting in a distinct, visible haze similar to one New Yorkers were subjected to back in June.
While scientists say the smoke is only expected to produce some haziness this time around, those with sensitivity may still want to take heed, officials have stated – as air quality levels are expected to reach well into the ‘moderate’ category.
Coming from the country’s air quality index, a measure of 0-50 is commonly accepted as good, while anything above 100 is widely considered unhealthy. As of 9am, New York’s air quality was a ‘moderate’ 58 – a level still threatening to those with preexisting issues.

The smoke is expected to remain above the surface, forecasters further warned – resulting in a distinct, visible haze similar to one New Yorkers were subjected to back in June, when parts of the Big Apple reached an air quality of above 480 – a level that’s technically off the charts
For reference, in June, when much of the Big Apple found itself shrouded in the Blade Runner-esque fog, the index reached an eyewatering 480 – a level that’s technically off the charts.
On Monday, as some slight smog could already be seen, Fox 5’s resident weather authority Mike Woods said for citizens to be wary, but to not get out of sorts,
‘If you are in the sensitive group, yeah, you probably want to take it easy,’ he said, mentioning people with lunch ailments and afflictions like asthma.
He then added: ‘But compared to what we had in June, this is pretty much nothing.’
Hours earlier, Mayor Eric Adams, after doing little to prepare the city last time around, aired his own warning through his official social media, telling New Yorkers they ‘will likely see hazy skies in the morning [and] throughout the day tomorrow.’
