A twisted football fan was fined over an offensive social media about his club’s striker being ‘on fire just like Mick Philpott’s house’ in reference to the killer arsonist dad.
Plymouth Argyle fan Gary Miller had been at March’s League One match against Derby County, which Argyle won 2-1 with striker Ryan Hardie scoring the winner.
The customer service advisor, 33, wrote on Twitter, before it was renamed X, that ‘Hardie was on fire just like Mick Phillpott’s house’.
Prosecutor Herc Ashworth told Plymouth Crown Court on Monday that Phillpott was a mass killer after his six children died in the 2012 arson attack at their family home in Derby.
The message was read by Derby County supporters – and one of them had an association to the tragic incident which saw Philpott jailed for life for setting fire to his home killing his six children aged between five and 13, the court heard.

A female Derby fan on the supporters’ bus home saw the tweet and showed it to others, who were horrified by the tweet.
Miller said it was meant to be a ‘joke’ but conceded it was ‘in bad taste’.
He admitted sending the offensive tweet and causing distress.
Miller, who is father to a new born baby, claimed he did not realise the children had died in the fire, which Mr Ashworth said was not realistic, but accepted he was stupid to send it.
He was fined £500 plus £250 costs by Judge David Evans who said the tweet was ‘insulting and distressing’.
He told him to celebrate things in a lawful manner in future.
