A retired police sergeant is offering armed dog walks under the name ‘Leash and Shield’ for pet owners who fear their animals will be snatched – as two million dogs are stolen in the US each year, including pop star Lady Gaga‘s bulldogs last year.
Carol Salvatierra, a self-described ‘veteran dog lover,’ began the armed pouch-walking service that she describes as ‘a body guard for your pets.’
An estimated two million dogs are stolen in the US each year, according to the American Kennel Club, and only about 10 percent ever see their furry friends again.
The majority of dog-owners now say they are scared to walk their pet over the heightened risk of theft, according to a study.
That’s where Salvatierra comes in. Her main objective is to provide her customers with ‘peace of mind.’

With rates starting at $60.00 an hour, Salvatierra offers ‘armed dog-walking services, loving care, and an extensive security background to keep your four-legged family members happy, healthy, and above all, safe,’ according to her website.
Her services include: security and risk management, in home dog sitting and license dog walking and defense.
She also told KTLA5 that she occasionally must also instruct her clients to be more observant in the streets and avoid wearing flashy jewelry while walking their pets.
In response to her choice to protect animals over people, Salvatierra said jokingly: ‘Is it bad to say I like dogs more than people?’
‘It’s going to sound corny but I think dogs are angels sent from heaven,’ she added.
Over three quarters of dog owners fear dognappers may be staking them out for a theft, and that dog theft was a ‘serious problem’ and thieves should face stiffer sentences.
Salvatierra, who has been in law enforcement for more than 26 years is and is a lifelong dog owner, said that her time as a crime prevention expert allows her to provide the upmost care and protection for her clients and their pooches.
‘My years as a crime prevention expert allow me to offer care and safety unequalled by other dog-walking services,’ she wrote on her website. ‘Our dogs are a never-ending source of comfort, companionship and joy.
‘Trust yours to someone who takes their care and safety as seriously as you do.
‘Dogs give us unconditional love, and those of us who love them back can’t imagine living without them.’
With a five star rating on Yelp, customers appear to be pleased with the service.

One five star reviewer said this of Leash and Shield: ‘Carol did an amazing job on being prompt, communicative, and keeping us updated on the dogs, what they’re up to, and how they’re adjusting to her.’
‘She immediately made them feel safe (they’re people wary) and ensured their comfort! She not only takes great care of the dogs but there was a sense of safety knowing her presence was there. Definitely recommend her.’
Another customer wrote: ‘I had the pleasure of hiring Leash and Shield to protect our families prized processions and our dog. I love the security element along with the love and protection of our dog. I would strongly recommend Carol if your wanting your dog loved and protected.’
Since the pandemic, dog thefts have surged across the country.

The supply of dogs also dwindled after a crackdown in April on puppy farms with poor welfare records.
Just a week ago, a woman was brutally beaten, and her dog stolen by a couple inside a 7-Eleven in North Hollywood. That victim has fortunately been reunited with her pup.
Lady Gaga’s pups, Koji and Gustav, were stolen from her dog walker, Ryan Fischer, at gunpoint in Los Angeles last year.
The report explained that several men pulled up next to Fischer, jumped out of the car, and grabbed the pups, shooting him in the process.

Fischer was walking all three of the pop star’s pups, but the assailants only took two of them.
He was left shot on the sidewalk when neighbors found him, and ended up surviving his injuries.
L.A. County Deputy District Attorney, Michele Hanisee, told TMZ McBride was aware the pups were stolen when she returned them.
Her intention was to obtain the reward. She also had known the men involved in the shooting for years.
McBride originally returned the dogs to the American Horror Story actress at the LAPD Olympic Community station two days after they were taken.
She was later charged with receiving stolen property in connection to the left.
The woman was also charged with being an accessory to the crime after the fact.
Allegedly, McBride was dating the father of one of the men responsible for the crime.
The man who shot Fischer, James Howard Jackson, pled no contest to a count of attempted murder and was given 21 years in prison.
The star can finally put the painful saga of her stolen dogs behind her.
On Thursday, the 37-year-old singer and actress had the woman’s request for her $500,000 reward for the dogs’ return thrown out for good, according to documents obtained by People.
