The State Department has issued a rare ‘worldwide caution’ travel advisory telling Americans to be on alert everywhere they go overseas due to ‘increased tensions’ and the potential for terror attacks as Israel’s war against Hamas rages.
Today’s alert comes after widespread, anti-American protests in the Middle East, that included a 24-hour siege of the US Embassy in Beirut.
The last time the alert was issued was in 2022 after the killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri.
The alert reads: ‘Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution. US citizens should:
Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.
