US forces in Syria yesterday intercepted two drones that were targeting bases near the Iraq border, Pentagon officials have confirmed.
The strikes were against the al-Tanf airbase near Syria’s border with Iraq and Jordan.
They were the fifth attempted strike against US troops in the Middle East in two days: on Tuesday, troops intercepted three individual drones in Iraq.
Two were headed for the al-Asad airbase and one targeted the Conoco base in the countryside of the northern Deir al-Zor region.
Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an Iran-backed group, has claimed credit for the attempted strike against the Conoco base.
According to anonymous sources cited by The Associated Press, troops were able to fend off two of the drones but only damage the third, leading to some injuries.
The extent of those injuries remains unclear.

The strikes come amid increased tension in the Middle East over the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which many now view as a conflict between the West and the Arab world.
President Biden has been steadfast in his support of Israel since Hamas attacked on October 7, supplying military aid and flying to the region in a show of strong alliance.
