A P-plater got his long weekend off to a bad start after he was allegedly caught drink driving two times within 12 hours on one of Victoria’s busiest highways.

The man, 29, had his red Mazda pulled over by police on the Western Freeway in Myrniong, north-west of Melbourne on Thursday night.

After a positive roadside reading, he was taken to a police station where he allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.133. The blood alcohol limit for P-plater drivers is zero.

The man’s license was immediately suspended, and he was issued with infringement notices for drink driving, exceeding the speed limit by 20km/h and failing to display P-plates.

Twelve hours later around 6am Friday, police returned to the Western Highway 40km in Warrenheip following reports a driver had crashed into a pole.

‘The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, the same 29-year-old Epping man from the previous incident, was assessed at the scene and taken back to a police station where he returned an evidentiary breath test 0.134,’ a police

‘Police discovered his infringement notices and paperwork regarding his licence suspension inside the crashed vehicle.’

The driver was charged with exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol and driving while suspended.

He was granted bail to face Ballarat Magistrates Court in November.

Ballarat police senior sergeant Paul Maslunka said that incidents like this show that some drivers are not willing to listen to the road rules.

‘While this incident is an isolated incident it does highlight the fact that some people still aren’t getting the message or are so self-absorbed, they don’t care about other road users,’ Senior sergeant Maslunka said.

‘Realistically we deal with less than one per cent of road users doing the wrong thing throughout the year but it’s that group that are consistently involved in causing road trauma.

‘I’d like to acknowledge the other 99 per cent out there who are doing the right thing and encourage everyone to do their part to keep the roads safe this long weekend.’
