Winning SEC football games can be costly, as the University of Mississippi is learning after being fined $75,000 by the conference following Saturday’s 55-49 upset over LSU, the conference announced Wednesday. Specifically, the penalty was issued for Ole Miss fans throwing debris on the field, resulting in a stoppage of play in the fourth quarter.
‘The disruption and delay of Saturday night’s game must never be part of any SEC event,’ SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. ‘These actions are consistent with the oversight assigned by the membership to the SEC office, including the financial penalty and mandated reviews.’
This comes on top of the $100,000 fine Ole Miss received for fans storming the field at the final gun on Saturday. Both fines will be deducted from the university’s share of SEC revenue distribution.
The SEC also instructed Ole Miss to attempt to identify the individuals who threw objects and prohibit them from attending more Rebels sporting events for the rest of the 2023-24 academic year.
Ole Miss must review and update its game management procedures and alcohol availability policies to prevent another such incident and submit a report to the SEC office. The league could suspend alcohol sales at Ole Miss games if the conditions are not met.
The scene turned hectic after the final whistle, as one out-of-control Rebels fan was seen being pushed to the turf after running into Tigers defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory (pictured).
In a video posted to X, the shirtless fan is seen recording himself screaming and running full speed ahead while storming the field. The wild fan then collides with Guillory as he walks off the field, causing the lineman to turn shove him the ground.
Guillory is listed on the LSU roster as standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 320 pounds.
A year ago, it was the University of Tennessee that insured a six-figure fine for celebrating a win over an SEC rival when the Volunteers upset Alabama in Knoxville. Not only was the school fined $100,000, but officials had to turn to fans to help pay for new goalposts after students ripped theirs out of the stadium and dumped them in a nearby river.
