The former mayor of a small Ohio town led cops on a dramatic high-speed chase – before telling officers that ‘what you’re doing is wrong’ as she was arrested for driving drunk. Cathy Luks, 66, who served as North Royalton’s mayor from 1999 to 2007, was pulled over by cops after they saw an expired license plate on her car Wednesday afternoon, but she seemed confused and uncooperative when a police officer trying to explain why he stopped her.
As she was being spoken to by officers while handcuffed in a squad car, she’s heard saying: ‘You know what? I was the mayor of the city of North Royalton.’ Newly released bodycam video shows Luks ignored the officer’s commands and was disoriented during the traffic stop.
The officer can be heard saying: ‘Because you’re going 43(mph) in a 25(mph) zone, and your plates are expired.’ ‘Do you have a driver’s license with you?’ the officer can be heard asking. ‘No,’ Luks said.
‘Where’s your driver’s license at?’ ‘No.’ ‘Can you pull into a park?’ ‘No,’ the former mayor answered every question with a continuous ‘no’, rolling her window up and speeding off. The officer dashed to his patrol car, threw on the blazing lights and blaring siren, chased Luks at speed up to 65 miles per hour.
About 30 seconds later, the officer caught up to Lux as she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tow truck in a parking lot. She was pulled out of her car and handcuffed but refused to get into the police unit, asking for her ‘stuff’ and a ‘seat’. ‘I want my stuff back,’ Luks can be heard repeatedly saying. ‘What you are doing is wrong. Let me tell you how it works.’
‘You know what? I was the mayor of the city of North Royalton,’ she finally took the chance to tell officers about her former title. She was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, speeding, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and driving with expired license plates. Luks showed up at the Parma Municipal Court the day after she was arrested. No plea was entered.
Her case for non-compliance – a third-degree felony – is expected to be brought to a Cuyahoga County grand jury in near future. Luks served as mayor from 1999 to 2007. Her tenure was tainted with some controversy. She used the word ‘petty’ to describe the complaints made by neighbors who were harassed by a local judge in 2003.
