This is the moment a man called police on 999 to report that he was being followed home by a cat.

The hilarious audio, which was shared by the Metropolitan Police on X, formerly Twitter, prompted the force to urge people not to misuse the emergency number.

The Met said: ‘Calling 999 to report a cat following you is not an emergency. Calls like these prevent those who really need an urgent police response from getting through to us.

‘Please only call 999 if a crime is in progress or there is a threat to life.’

In the baffling call, a man explains that he is being followed home by a cat, which started running after him, and was unsure ‘what to do with it’.

The odd exchange begins with a police call handler saying: ‘Hello Met Police, what’s your emergency?’

The man then replies: ‘Actually we are wallking home and there is a cat following us.

‘I think it’s from someone and it’s following us for a long time.

He continues: ‘So we don’t know – even if – she started running after us.

‘I don’t know what to do with it.’

The handler, who is clearly in disbelief of what he has just heard, then says: ‘So a cat is following you.’

This is not the first time that police forces have shared ridiculous 999 calls in a bid to spur a crackdown on wasting police time.

One caller can be heard informing police they saw a deer that looked like ‘Bambi’ running through their estate and another dialled 999 to say ‘I found a wallet’.

In another call, a man can be heard asking police to wake him at 9.30am and escort him to his court appearance.

Hampshire Constabulary also revealed they receive calls about UFO sightings and even people complaining their pizza has not been delivered.

In the audio released by police, one caller said: ‘I have a letter from Hampshire police and they told me about court.

‘I was wondering if someone can wake me up at 9.30am… and take me to the court.’

A stunned call handler replied: ‘Sorry, have you called 999 asking us to wake you up at 9.30 in the morning to take you to court?’

Another caller dialled 999 to say ‘I found a wallet’ and another phoned to say ‘I saw a deer running through our estate’, describing it as ‘like a little Bambi’.
