A seven-year-old boy has been struck and killed by an NYPD truck while crossing the road in Fort Green, Brooklyn with his mother.

The tragic collision occurred around 7:43 am on Thursday at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and North Portland Avenue in Fort Greene, just above Fort Greene Park.

The tow truck turned right from Myrtle Avenue onto North Portland Avenue, striking the boy as he and his mother crossed the street, NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said in a statement.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The 54-year-old female driver, whose name has not yet been released, remained at the scene after being flagged down by witnesses a block away from the scene.

Tyrana Carter, a witness to the collision told the New York Times the boy was riding a bright green scooter alongside his mother, who was pushing another child in a stroller.

Carter said the driver of the tow truck appeared to be trying to beat a yellow light when she struck the boy.

‘When she came around the corner, she hit the kid and she rolled over him,’ Carter said.

Mary Lynne Werlwas, who has lived in the neighborhood for 24 years, told the New York Times that she came across the scene on her way to move her car.

Werlwas said she saw a woman in the street and a body covered by a white sheet.

The woman was screaming ‘my baby is dead’, she recalled.

‘The community, everybody is very upset,’ she added.

An investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing and it is not yet clear if the tow truck driver will face charges.
