Elon Musk has revealed his support for a border wall, and claimed migrants should have evidence of their asylum claims before being admitted to the country.
Just days after announcing an upcoming visit to crisis-hit Eagle Pass, Texas, Musk took to X, known as Twitter before he bought it, to address the thousands who have crossed into the US this month.
The town of just 28,000 people has been overwhelmed by migrants in recent days, with border crossings rising to around 8,000 a day in the week ending September 22, according to the Washington Office of Latin America. Throughout the month of August, upwards of 232,000 migrants made their way over the US-Mexico border.
‘We actually do need a wall, and we need to require people to have some shred of evidence to claim asylum to enter, as everyone is doing that,’ the Tesla founder, 52, said on Wednesday. ‘It’s a hack that you can literally Google to know exactly what to say!’
According to local reports, most of the asylum seekers are Venezuelans who say they had to leave their home country because of the economic and social collapse of the South American nation under the socialist regime of Nicolas Maduro.
Elon Musk has announced he will go to Eagle Pass, Texas, later this week to observe the situation at the US-Mexico border
Throughout the month of August, upwards of 232,000 migrants crossed the US-Mexico border – and up to two million are estimated to have crossed this year
Musk said he would find out more about the situation when he visits Eagle Pass ‘maybe as soon as’ Thursday.
He made the comments while replying to a video of Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy claiming he won’t support funding for Ukraine until the government addresses the border crisis.
‘The (USA) border needs to be secured. This is not a partisan issue – even the elected Democrat Party leaders of New York are saying this is a severe crisis,’ Musk added.
He also clarified that while ‘Most of the (very long) border is super inconvenient… the convenient parts of the border need walls and that’s not hard.’
It comes after Musk claimed on Tuesday that he had spoken to congressman Tony Gonzales, who has been sounding the alarm about the crisis, and decided to go see the scene for himself.
‘I spoke with Rep Tony Gonzales tonight – he confirmed that it is a serious issue,’ Musk wrote on Tuesday. ‘They are being overwhelmed by unprecedented numbers – just hit an all-time high and still growing! Am going to visit Eagle Pass later this week to see what’s going on for myself.’
In a different post responding to a DailyMail.com video of chaos outside a migrant shelter in Staten Island, Musk said ‘this is a severe crisis.’
Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinos declared a state of emergency over the crisis, but a document allegedly leaked by a Border Agent appears to show that the unprecedented number of arrivals is now making it impossible for them to effectively guard the crossing.
Many migrants are the victims of elaborate multi-billion dollar human trafficking schemes that are run by drug cartels
Officials have long said that the influx of migrants crossing the border illegally is directly linked to multi-billion dollar human trafficking schemes run by the notoriously violent Mexican drug cartels
The report was shared by DC Examiner reporter Anna Giaritelli on X, who claimed that ‘all Border Patrol agents have pulled to other duties (mainly processing migrants) so not a single agent will be in the field.’
Giaritelli added that the agent who shared the document is ‘pretty pi**** off about this’, a sentiment echoed by Elon Musk as he revealed this week he is travelling to Eagle pass to help grapple with the ‘serious issue.’
According to the leaked document, which has not been independently verified by DailyMail.com, all Border Patrol agents in Eagle Pass are assigned to processing at various migrant centers.
The memo adds that there should be nothing ‘indicating any type of field deployment/ enforcement’ at the border.
The lack of any border patrol agents comes as officers struggle to cope with crossing numbers only matched by April 2023 levels, when pandemic-era immigration policy Title 42 ended.
Harrowing images from the porous border show droves of migrants traversing difficult terrain and wading through the Rio Grande river.
Families are seen clinging to each other, with some struggling to carry soaking wet bags of belongings across the water.
After crossing from the Mexico side in Piedras Negras, the asylum seekers were met by law enforcement, including the National Guard, before they reached long lines of razor wire.
Stunning images have shown droves of migrants traversing difficult terrain and wading through the Rio Grande river on their way over the southern border
Officers were seen helping people through the terrain, including lifting small children exhausted by the journey to safety, while many migrants were pictured queuing up as they waited to be processed.
Shelters in border towns like Eagle Pass have been stretched well over capacity due to the thousands of crossings every day.
As officials scramble for solutions, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has led the movement to bus migrants to northern states to share the burden of ineffective border policies while bringing the crisis to national attention.
In New York, where over 100,000 migrants have poured into the city, Mayor Eric Adams admitted this month that the influx could ‘destroy’ the Big Apple.
But Salinas took aim at such comments as he slammed Biden’s response to the influx in Eagle Pass, saying on social media this week: ‘We’re not a city that has the resources of New York, Chicago, cities like that.
‘You already see big cities already complaining that they’re getting large amounts of undocumented immigrants. I mean, we’re Eagle Pass. We only have limited resources, so this is not sustainable.
‘As a mayor, what’s disappointing is that we haven’t heard from the president of the United States or the vice president of the United States… ‘To this day, I haven’t heard of a concrete plan of action to stop this from continuing to happen. Sometimes, we feel kind of abandoned here at the at the border here in Eagle Pass.’
