The felling of the Sycamore Gap tree has provoked a furious reaction from MPs and environmentalists who said they felt ‘appalled’ and ‘saddened’ at its loss.

But others have taken to social media to posts memes making light of Britain’s most famous tree being cut down, with one saying: ‘RIP Sycamore Gap tree’.

Some posting on X have compared the act to The Simpsons episode ‘The Telltale Head’ when Bart cuts the head off a statue to impress three older children.

Others said the tree was ‘with Harambe now’, in reference to the gorilla killed by a zookeeper at Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio in 2016 when a toddler fell into his enclosure.

It comes as police questioned a 16-year-boy arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after the 300-year-old tree in Northumberland was cut down.

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness called the felling a ‘senseless crime’ while Labour MP Mary Foy described it as a ‘very sad day’.

Here are some memes posted about the tree that stood along Hadrian’s Wall:
