Woolworths stores across Australia have been hit by EFTPOS outages – with signs put up requesting that customers pay cash only.

Shoppers on Friday reported that EFTPOS machines weren’t functioning at the supermarket’s Mawson, ACT; Pakenham Marketplace, Victoria, Sunnybank Hills and Pittsworth, Queensland and several stores across Sydney‘s south and west.

Seven News reported that between 10 and 20 stores in several different states were affected.

It is understood the outages were caused by internet issues, with most of the affected stores now back online.

‘We’d like to thank customers for their patience with an IT outage affecting EFTPOS in a small number of stores,’ a Woolworths spokesperson said.

‘Stores remained open with cash still being able to be used. The cause has been identified and EFTPOS is being restored.’

‘Again we thank everyone for bearing with us this morning.’

One shopper took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a photo of a handwritten sign stuck to a hand sanitizer cart near the entrance to their local store, captioned ‘cash only at the local Woolies!’

‘We temporily (sic) have no EFPOS (sic) due to no internet,’ the sign read.

‘Cash only. Sorry for any inconvenience.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Woolworths for comment.
