Facundo Farias has revealed that his wife wasn’t initially keen at the prospect of him playing with his idol and compatriot, Lionel Messi, at Inter Miami, when they were first informed of the opportunity to move the U.S. in July.
Recalling the sacrifices made while securing a move from Argentina to the U.S. over the summer, Farias, 21, said that his other half – Angi – had to give up her university studies so that he could play in the MLS, which she didn’t take kindly to.
‘She was studying her major but we had to move here,’ he told The Athletic. ‘She wanted to kill me! But I told her, ”We’re going to play with Messi!”’
Farias, who became a father for the first time in June, had a rough upbringing in Los Hornos, a modest town in Sante Fe, before starting his career with Colon back in his homeland.
He lost his mother to cancer at age 10 years, and, not long after that, his grandfather passed away too.
Facundo Farias said his wife Angi (L) didn’t want to give her up her studies to move to the U.S.

The attacking midfielder admits that going through difficult life experiences at such as a tender age has helped him achieve his dreams, including playing with childhood hero Messi, and grow into the player that he is today.
‘It’s honest been very difficult,’ said Farias. ‘I’ve taken a lot blow because of the losses in my life.
‘But I think that has all made me strong enough to be where I am today.
‘Growing up, I wanted to be a footballer. If it didn’t happen, fine. But I would’ve died knowing that I tried everything to make it. Thankfully it worked out.’
Farias and Messi have been called up for Argentina’s World Cup qualifying games this month
Things have worked out so well for Farias this year, despite Inter Miami’s elimination from playoff contention, that he’s been called up to Argentina’s national team for the first time in his career.
He was named along with Messi in Lionel Scaloni’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru, respectively on October 12 and October 17.
Farias scored three goals in six appearances since moving to Miami, three months ago.
