Deputy leader of the Australian Greens Mehreen Faruqi has been slammed after calling the Australian government a ‘disgrace’ for showing support of Israel following the sickening Hamas terror attacks on innocent civilians.

In response to an announcement Parliament House would be lit up blue and white, the colours of the Israeli flag, Senator Faruqi, who is of Pakistani heritage, tweeted on Monday: ‘One colonial government supporting another, what a disgrace’.

Her comments, which included a #FreePalestine hashtag, follow a surprise attack by Palestinian extremists on October 7 who crossed the border from Gaza into Israel and indiscriminately slaughtered or kidnapped hundreds of Israelis, including women and children, at an outdoor music festival and in their homes.

In a tweet earlier that day, she wrote: ‘My thoughts are with those living the brutal savagery of war in the Middle East at the moment. Civilians should never be the target.

‘Gaza’s civilians are on the precipice of annihilation because the blockade means they have nowhere to go.

‘If we are serious about ending violence and moving to peace, there has to be an end to the blockade, an end to Israel’s occupation and oppression, and freedom for Palestine.’

Commenters on Senator Faruqi’s tweet were furious that she took an opportunistic swipe at the Australian government but did not condemn the horrific attacks.

‘So no outright condemnation of terrorist group Hamas?’ one person asked.

‘As an immigrant I’m appalled at this. Ms Faruqi, your words make me feel unsafe. Your words are violence. You have no right to be in any parliament in any civilised country,’ another said.

Greens Deputy Leader Senator Mehreen Faruqi has been slammed after taking a swipe at the Australian government for showing solidarity with Israel following appalling terrorist attacks

Some commenters said Senator Faruqi’s comments were divisive and inflamed tensions especially considering they coincided with an ‘appalling’ pro-Palestine protest held in front of Sydney Opera House on Monday night.

‘Disgusting… Dark day for the Greens. Just bizarre,’ one said.

‘Shame on you. What a divisive scoundrel you are,’ added another.

‘Hope you reflect on your heartless and inhuman words,’ added a third.

‘Aren’t Jews indigenous to that land Mehreen?’

‘Jewish people have been living in the Levant & surrounding area for thousands of years. That’s not colonial.

Some pointed out Senator Faruqi’s comments could be seen as hypocritical.

‘You immigrated here and became a parliamentarian. What a hollow statement,’ one said.

‘So, you sit in a colonial parliament. That makes you a colonialist,’ another agreed.

Another said: ‘We pay tax dollars for this? I don’t think you are fit to lead.’

“Shame on you.’

Monday’s rally was organised by the Palestine Action Group with NSW Greens MP Jenny Leong sharing the event details on Twitter beforehand, describing the decision to light the Opera House sails in the Israeli colours as ‘appalling’.

‘What about all of the Palestinian lives lost since occupation?’ she asked.

Former Prime Minister John Howard has taken aim at Anthony Albanese for not being firm enough in his condemnation of the pro-Palestine protests

About 700 pro-Palestinian protesters attended and some were seen chanting ‘gas the Jews’ and burning the Star of David in front of Sydney‘s Opera House on Monday night as part of the rally.

There were scenes of chaos as a rally outside the Opera House was hijacked by radical Muslims – some wearing black masks – who hurled lit flares at police and chanted ‘f*** Israel’ and ‘f*** the Jews’

In stark contrast, a handful of people with Israeli flags were arrested on sight in a move police said was for their own protection.

The horrific actions were condemned by leaders on all ends of the political spectrum, but Mr Howard, who led Australia in the wake of the September 11 attacks, said the Prime Minister’s denouncement did not go far enough.

Mr Albanese should make some unequivocal statements, as should the Foreign Minister,’ he told The Australian.

The rally, organised by the Palestine Action Group Sydney, saw vast numbers of pro-Palestine activists gather at Town Hall in Sydney’s CBD before marching to the Opera House. A NSW Greens MP shared the details of the event beforehand

‘Instead of that there is pussyfooting and lukewarm condemnation. Then you have the New South Wales Attorney-General (Michael Daley) saying everyone should remain calm and go home.

‘How can you remain calm when demonstrators are invoking the memory of the Holocaust? People remain calm in that?

‘I never thought we would crumple to this … We need leadership from the top, we aren’t getting that at the moment.’

Senator Faruqi has been contacted for comment.
