A delighted dog owner has been reunited with her spaniel Indie after she disappeared down a 30ft-deep sinkhole in Wales.

Hollie Veryard, 31, saw her pet dog vanish into ‘thin air’ after she let her off the lead while on a mountain walk with a friend.

She was searching the top of Pen-Pych Mountain in Rhondda, South Wales, when she spotted ‘sinkhole’ crevices in the ground.

Hollie said: ‘We had got to the top and there was a flat bit so I decided to let her off to have a run around but when I called her back to put her on lead she had vanished into thin air.

‘I was calling and calling her but nothing happened and I knew she wouldn’t run off because she’s not like that.

‘I went back to where I lost her and I saw all these little sinkholes in the ground.’

Hollie, from Verwood in Dorset, said she struggled to locate the dog but was helped by another walker who ‘dangled’ down the holes with someone holding him by the ankles.

She said: ‘We found she was down one of the holes about 10 metres down just on a little ledge.’

The mother-of-two was scared Indie may be badly injured from the fall and sought help to try to pull her out.

Indie was trapped down the hole for more than six hours before she was finally freed by firefighters and cave rescue specialists.

Hollie said: ‘The police came and sorted the fire service and the cave rescue team to come and help.

‘I knew that Indie was alive because she kept lifting her head up to look at me and would cry whenever she couldn’t see me but I didn’t know if she had any broken bones or anything.’

She added: ‘The crevice wasn’t big enough for anyone to go down there so they made a little noose to fit around her and pull her out.

‘It was very emotional when she came out. The moment her feet were on the floor her tail was wagging.’
