Campaigners have called for a ban on describing women’s reproductive conditions as ‘benign’.

The word is commonly used in reference to conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It means the diseased tissue does not spread into surrounding organs similarly to cancer and isn’t fatal.

However, Endometriosis UK, which campaigns for the 1.5 million UK women who suffer the pain problem, say the term is ‘undermining’ and contributes to delays in treatment as the condition isn’t viewed as a priority. The average patient waits around eight years for a diagnosis.

Emma Cox, chief executive of the charity, says: ‘The impression is that those with the disease and other gynaecology conditions are less in need of timely support and treatment, even though their symptoms can be severe and life-changing.’

Women who follow a plant-based diet have a lower risk of developing high blood pressure in pregnancy, a study shows.

An analysis of more than 11,000 women found those with the highest proportion of plant to animal-based products in their diet also had less chance of developing the potentially serious condition pre-eclampsia.

Study author Dr Jorge Chavarro, a professor of nutrition, epidemiology and medicine at Harvard University’s Medical School and School of Public Health, says: ‘We have seen that this type of diet, if it’s a quality diet, may be associated with health benefits.’
