Travellers were forced to wait five hours for their easyJet plane to be deep cleaned after the pilot was bitten by a mosquito in the cockpit.

An easyJet Airbus A320 was invaded by a swarm of bugs ahead of its flight from Amsterdam to Manchester last month, The Sun reported.

Furious passengers have claimed that boarding was delayed by about five hours while crew dealt with some ‘technical difficulties’.

Travellers were reportedly left in the dark about the infestation until the pilot came out and admitted he ‘wanted the entire plane deep-cleaned’ after being bit by a mosquito.

EasyJet has said that the ‘safety and well-being’ of both its passengers and crew is ‘our highest priority’.

The flight was scheduled to depart Schiphol airport at 5.05pm on September 25. However, the hour-long flight did not land in Manchester until 10.30pm.

Veterinary nurse Rachel Green, 27,  was among those on the flight. She said that easyJet did not offer any explanation about delay during the cleaning process.

‘The departure time on the board kept going up and up,’ she told The Sun.

‘Eventually, the pilot came out and told us that he’d been bitten by a mosquito in the cockpit, so he wanted the entire plane deep-cleaned in case there were more bugs.’

Ms Green, who is apparently frustrated by the budget air carrier’s handling of the incident, added that easyJet only offered travellers a £3.90 food voucher as compensation for disruption.

She thinks easyJet should have instead ‘flown another plane out to us.’

MailOnline has approached the airline for comment.
