Surveillance footage captured the moment a 22-year-old man stood motionless in a Polish department store posing as a mannequin.
Holding his pose until closing time, the man then sprung back to life, bag at the ready, and allegedly proceeded to ransack a Warsaw jewellery store.
‘When he felt safe, he went hunting and robbed the island of jewellery’, assistant inspector Robert Szumiata from the Śródmieście District Police Headquarters said in a statement.
This was not the first instance the man had allegedly stolen from the department store.
Szumiata said on another occasion the man allegedly again waited for closing before grabbing a bite to eat at a nearby bar. He then maneuvered his way into a another store under a steel curtain and allegedly grabbed some designer clothing.

The man was temporarily arrested for three months and faces up to 10 years in jail
‘On the way, he stopped at a familiar bar once again to eat another meal. However, his luck finally ran out on him as he was spotted and captured by security personnel who called the police.’
He said it was ‘known’ that the 22-year-old had committed thefts and burglaries in another gallery, ‘where, after its closure, he took money from several cash registers and tried to steal other items’.
Szumiata confirmed the downtown Department for Combating Property Crime has charged the man with burglary and theft.
At the request of the Warsaw Śródmieście Północ District Prosecutor’s Office, the court decided to temporarily arrest the man for three months.
The Penal Code provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment for these crimes, he said.
